The most common pattern of walking impairment poststroke is hemiparetic gait, which is characterized by asymmetry associated with an extensor synergy pattern of hip extension and adduction, knee extension, and ankle plantar flexion and inversion.

To improve abnormal gait patterns physiotherapists must determine the underlying causes in order to provide effective treatment. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the neurological impairments of hemiparetic stroke patients, explore their relationship to gait deviations and test whether observation of an individual patient's gait pattern pelvis to teach a symmetric gait pattern to the hemiparetic patients [16]. Even though these patients generally present challenges to control the distal limb, the intervention on the pelvis could provide more flexibility to patients to account for characteristics such as spasticity, range of motion, and weakness. However, the speed, per se, affects in a significant fashion gait patterns inducing relevant modifications of the hemiparetic locomotion [12, 15, 16]. As matter of the fact, the inherent instability of the affected limb prompts the patients to an early shift of the weight on the unaffected one inducing an asymmetric duration of stance and swing phases [ 15 , 16 ]. Post-stroke gait dysfunction occurs at a very high prevalence.

B.) Paraparetic: similar to hemiparetic gait but involves bilateral lower legs. Gait is spastic, spastic and ataxic and/or scissoring. 21. Treatment: Physical therapy for gait and balance training. Anti-spastic medications and botulinum injections to reduce muscle tone and spasticity.

Gait rehabilitation programs include muscle strength training, task-specific gait training, treadmill training, electromechanical and robot-assisted gait training, functional electrical stimulations, ankle foot orthoses (AFOs), virtual reality, mental practice with motor imagery, and botulinum toxin injection of spastic muscles (Verma et al., 2012; Tenniglo et al., 2014; Beyaert et al., 2015

Hemiparetic gait is characterized by asymmetry associated with an extensor synergy pattern of hip extension and adduction, knee extension, and ankle plantar flexion and inversion. This study developed a 10-channeled textile capacitive pressure sensing insole (TCPSI) with a real-time monitoring system and tested its performance through hemiparetic gait pattern analysis. Patterns of abnormal gait Antalgic gait. An antalgic gait is one in which the patient avoids certain movements to avoid acute pain. Typically there is: Limited joint range of motion with an inability to bear full weight on an affected extremity. Stance phase duration shortened to compensate pain in the affected leg. To improve abnormal gait patterns physiotherapists must determine the underlying causes in order to provide effective treatment.

An analytical tool that quantifies muscle patterns in hemiparetic gait needs to account for spatiotemporal gait asymmetries. Simulation studies of human walking based on computer-implemented musculoskeletal models have demonstrated that muscle activity in healthy individuals produce specific biomechanical outputs during the gait cycle [ 17 , 19 ]. Gait is the collective term for the two types of bipedal locomotion, walking and running. This paper is focused on walking. The analysis of human gait is of interest to many different disciplines, including biomechanics, human-movement science, rehabilitation and medicine in general.
